2018 / Product design / Palm Chest
Made from beach wood and date palm leaves, Palm Chest is a fusion of a traditional Egyptian material and classic Scandinavian aesthetics.
Inspiration to the storage furniture was taken from a study trip to Egypt; the mystic feeling around ancient Egyptian storage chests, the strong sunlight, sharp shadows and natural materials in their raw states.
In Egypt, date palm leaves are traditionally used for making hats, baskets, ropes etc, and is regarded a cheap material with no higher aesthetical value. In the Palm Chest, the leaves play a central role, giving the furniture a tactile and delicate appearance.
The prototype was made at Pinocchio furniture factory in Damietta, Egypt.
The project was made together with Marja Holst.
